New article on fables inspired by Aesop's ones during 7th and 6th BC. The title resonate with Delafontaine's fable. This one morale is to prevent futur life problems, we should store rather than have fun.

However, Toni and Slade Morrison tell us another morale : one grasshopper who's living off her music in the streets seek help to her friend, an ant who has worked hard to provide for her family and future. Which one is right ? Who's got the best lifestyle to follow?

Toni Morrison, Nobel price of litterature in 1993, is a famous american writer. She teaches at Princeton university.

• CHARACTERS

Two friends : a grasshopper and an ant spend their summer creating. When automn points its nose, their path diverge. Ant or Kid A choose to work hard to store in anticipation of the winter. Grasshopper or Foxy G continue to make passengers vibrate with his lively melodies and his wild moves.

Once winter appears, Foxy G seek help to his old friend Kid A. 

• DESIGNS

The illustrator, Pascal Lemaître, supports the story with his graphic interpretation. Thee comic-like illustrations are drawn by pen with bright colors and few shades.

• COMMENTS

Once again, Toni Morrison and her son, Slade ask a deep question. 

How can we argue who's right between ant and grasshopper? Can we be happy without much attachment? Is it possible to be happy just by providing to our needs and possible future problems? Who are we to judge someone in a difficult position?

Nouvel article sur les fables inspirée de celles d'Ésope du VIIe et VIe siècle avant J.C. Le titre résonne avec celui de Jean Delafontaine. La morale de cette fable est qu'il vaut mieux se protéger des dangers de la vie en stockant plutôt que ne faire que s'amuser.

Pourtant, Toni et Slade Morrison montrent une toute autre morale : une cigale musicienne vivant de son art dans les rues vient demander de l'aide dans une période difficile à son ami, une fourmi qui a dû travailler pour subvenir aux besoins de sa famille et à son futur. Qui des deux a raison ? Quelle vie est la meilleure à suivre ?

Toni Morrison, prix Nobel de littérature en 1993, est l'auteur américaine de célèbres romans pour adultes. Elle enseigne à l'université de Princeton.

• PERSONNAGES :

Deux amies : une cigale et une fourmi passant l'été à créer. Puis quand l'automne arrive, leur chemin se sépare. Fourmi ou Kid A choisit de travailler dur pour remplir ses réserves en prévision d'un hiver prochain. Cigale ou Foxy G continue de faire vibrer les passants avec ses mélodies entraînantes et ses déhanchements furieux.

Une fois le froid installé, Foxy G vient demander de l'aide à son ami Kid A. 

• ILLUSTRATIONS :

L'illustrateur, Pascal Lemaître, donne une interprétation graphique supportant bien le texte. Les dessins, sous forme de BD, sont tracés au stylo feutre accompagné de couleurs vives et peu d'ombrages.

Encore une question importante soulevée par Toni Morrison et son fils, Slade. 

En effet, peut-on vraiment argumenter qui entre fourmi et cigale a raison ? Est-il possible de vivre heureux sans avoir trop d'attachements ? Est-il possible d'être heureux en ne subvenant qu'à nos besoins et en prévenant les dangers futurs ? Qui sommes-nous pour juger quelqu'un en situation de besoin ?

The story is from the collection " Just So Stories " by Rudyard Kipling. This tale traces the myth of the domestication of wild animals by humans. Several animals are represented: the dog, the horse and the cow. The cat is the only animal with cunning and intelligence allow him to take advantage of his situation.

• CHARACTERS

The characters represented are wild cat, wild dog, wild horse and wild cow, and a woman and a man. Each character appears progressively in the story. Interactions mainly pass between the woman and each animal.

• DESIGNS

The illustrations were made by Leah Weber. The illustrations are very detailed , the main colors are green , beige and red.

This illustrator works mainly for the youth press and publishing.

Personnal comments : This kind of tale is one that I prefer. Unfortunately, I couldn't read it to children as they were too young. However, I advise all those interested in myths and legends and moral stories to read "Just so stories."

L'histoire est tirée du recueil de nouvelles « Histoires comme ça » de Rudyard Kipling. 

Ce conte-nouvelle retrace le mythe de la domestication des animaux sauvages par les hommes. Plusieurs animaux sont représentés : le chien, le cheval et la vache. Le chat est le seul animal dont la ruse et l'intelligence lui permettra de tirer profit de sa situation. 

• PERSONNAGES :

Les personnages représentés sont le chat sauvage, le chien sauvage, le cheval sauvage et la vache sauvage, et l'homme et la femme. Chaque personnage apparaît au fur et à mesure dans l'histoire. Les interactions se passent essentiellement entre la femme et chacun des animaux.

• ILLUSTRATIONS :

Les illustrations ont été faites par Léa Weber. Les illustrations sont très détaillées, les couleurs principales sont le vert, le beige et le rouge. 

Cette illustratrice travaille essentiellement pour la presse jeunesse et l'édition.

Commentaires personnels : Les contes-nouvelles sont l'un des types de contes que je préfère. Je n'ai malheureusement pas pu le présenter à des enfants car trop jeunes. Par contre, je conseillerai à toutes personnes intéressées par les mythes et légendes et les morales de lire « Histoires comme ça ».

This is the second review I'm doing on Toni and Slade Morrison's book. This one is different that the album story I posted on «The big box». 

The story of «Who's got game ? Poppy or the Snake ?» is inspired by a fable by Aesop, Greek slave and story-teller of about 400 fables between 620 and 560 BCE.

In this story, Toni and Slade are revisiting Aesop's fables and give new interpretations. 

« Their powerful, modern, rythmic stories are receptive ; with an ending giving reinvented moral lessons. The victim may be winning, the fearful has a chance to become strong, the idiot can be insightful, the powerful can lose its power. Anything can happen !» (translated from French)

• CHARACTERS
  

There are three characters in the book : an old man, the story-teller, his grandson and a snake.

The grandson is telling his granpa he doesn't want to go back to school after summer time because he think he isn't smart, have bad grades at school and his parents think of him as a lazy and dreamy child. The old man then tells him a story about him and a snake.

This is a philosophical tale. So the ending of the story has a moral lesson. 

• DESIGNS
  

The illustrations have been made by Pascal Lemaître. He is an illustrator since 1990 for French and American press. 

The graphics are made as in a comic book. The illustrations are often simplistic and sometimes more detailed. Pascal Lemaître has chosen few colors for all the illustrations (brown, green, black, blue and grey).

C'est la deuxième fois que je commente un livre de Toni et Slade Morrison. Celui-ci est différent l'autre histoire «Ma liberté à moi».

L'histoire « À ton avis... Le vieil homme ou le serpent ? » est inspiré d'une fable d'Ésope, un esclave et conteur grec ayant écrit environ 400 fables entre 620 et 560 avant notre ère. Dans cette histoire, Toni et Slade revisitent une des fables d'Ésope et lui donne de nouvelles interprétations.

« Leurs histoires, à l'écriture rythmée, puissante, moderne, sont ouvertes ; les chutes en forme de morale réinventée. La victime sera peut-être gagnante, le craintif a une chance de devenir fort, l'idiot peut s'avérer perspicace, le puissant peut perdre son pouvoir. • PERSONNAGES :

Il y a trois personnages dans cette histoire : un vieil homme, le conteur, son petit-fils et un serpent.

Le petit-fils dit à son grand-père qu'il ne veut pas retourner à l'école après les vacances d'été parce qu'il pense qu'il n'est pas intelligent, a des mauvaises notes à l'école et ses parents pensent qu'il est un enfant paresseux et rêveur. Le vieil homme lui raconte alors une histoire sur lui et un serpent.

Ceci est un conte philosophique. Ainsi, la fin de l'histoire a une leçon de morale.

• ILLUSTRATIONS :

Les illustrations ont été réalisées par Pascal Lemaître. Il est un illustrateur depuis 1990 poru la presse française et américaine. Les images sont faites sous forme de bandes dessinées. Les illustrations se veulent plus souvent simplistes et parfois plus détaillées. Pascal Lemaître a choisi certaines couleurs pour toutes les illustrations (brun, vert, noir, bleu et gris).
