This European folktale speaks of the young epic Greta through the storytelling of her journey to the ice castle, where the Snow Queen held captive her dear friend Kay . The latter was bewitched by a piece of ice that entered his eye, which had the effect that his attitude changed from good to bad. As in her journey, several characters will help Greta to take the direction to the castle. Greta confronts the Snow Queen and guards at her palace.

• CHARACTERS

Greta is a courageous young girl who rescues her dear friend Kay. It was on a stormy day that Kay was bewitched by the Snow Queen, having a burst of ice stuck in his eye. Kay then became nastier.

The Snow Queen lives alone in her castle and kidnap young boys to be her slaves.

• DESIGNS

The illustrations in this tale include few main colors : white , blue, and some touches of bright colors here and there . They clearly show the freezing cold by representing for example the change of Kay skin condition , from pink to white.

Personnal comments : This traditional tale is one of the few showing heroines who goes look for her friend, who is courageous and determined. Greta faces danger without hesitation. This is a refreshing tale which, thanks to the success of the film of the same name, is very popular with children of all ages.

• HISTOIRE :

Ce conte traditionnel européen parle de l'épopée de Greta, jeune fille, à travers les contées de son pays jusqu'au château de glaces, où la Reine des Neiges tient captif son cher ami Kay. Ce dernier fut ensorcelé par un éclat de glace qui entra dans son oeil, ce qui eut pour effet que son attitude changea du bon au mauvais.

Au fur et à mesure de son voyage, plusieurs personnages viendront en aide à Greta pour lui donner la direction du château.

Greta affronte la Reine des Neiges et les gardes de son palais.

• PERSONNAGES :

Greta est une jeune fille courageuse qui porte secours à son cher ami Kay. Celui-ci fut ensorcelé un jour de tempête par la Reine des Neiges, en ayant un jour un éclat de glace coincé dans son oeil. Kay devint alors plus méchant qu'à son habitude.

La Reine des Neiges vit seule dans son château et enlève de jeune garçon pour en faire ses esclaves.

• ILLUSTRATIONS :

Les illustrations de ce conte comportent des couleurs principales : le blanc, le bleu et quelques touches de couleurs vives par ci et là.

Celles-ci montrent bien le froid glacial en représentant le changement d'état de peau de Kay, passant du rose au blanc.

• APPRÉCIATION : *****

Commentaires personnels : Ce conte traditionnel montre une des rares héroïnes qui par à la recherche de son ami, qui est courageuse, déterminée et qui affronte les dangers sans hésiter. C'est un conte rafraîchissant et qui, grâce au succès du film du même nom, est très apprécié par les enfants de tout âge.

• STORY

The story is an adaptation of the tale of Paul-Jacques Bonzon "The bear who had taken the sun." This is the staging of a legend : while winter arrives with its share of snow and ice, the bear is known to steal the sun until spring. He keeps it to himself, snug in its den. But two children, Peter and Sigrid, who are living in a small village on the edge of the forest and feeling that the winter is too long and  too dark, follow the legend and go in search of the bear at top of the mountain.

• CHARACTERS

Several characters are presented : Peter and Sigrid , the two children, the Blue fox, the Reindeer - King of the forest and finally the Bear. Children decide to make a journey through the dangers of the forest, the bitter cold and their own imagination.

• DESIGNS

Anna Emilia Laitinen is the illustrator of this tale . The illustrations are made with many details . The colors are soft aveec a predominance of different green , white, gray and brown.

Personnal comments : This tale speaking about a legend is interesting in my opinion and leads the reader to travel in his own imagination. I read this tale to children aged 3 to 5 years, and although the text was long, children were very receptive and interested.

Secondly, this story reminds me also to other similar stories: Princess Mononoke and Nausicaä of the Valley of the Wind (Hayao Miyazaki), where humans and nature are confronting, where animals are gods and wise and where humans learn to live with nature and to respect it.

• HISTOIRE :

L'histoire est une adaptation du conte de Paul-Jacques Bonzon « L'ours qui avait pris le soleil». Il s'agit de la mise en scène d'une légende : l'hiver arrivant avec son lot de neige et de glaces, l'ours est connu pour voler le soleil jusqu'au printemps. Il le garde pour lui seul, bien au chaud dans sa tanière.

Deux enfants, Peter et Sigrid, vivent dans un petit village à l'orée de la forêt et trouve l'hiver bien long et sombre. Ils suivent la légende et s'en vont à la recherche de l'ours tout en haut de la montagne.

• PERSONNAGES :

Plusieurs personnages sont présentés : Peter et Sigrid, les deux enfants, le Renard bleu, le Renne-roi de la forêt et enfin l'Ours. Les enfants font un périple à travers les dangers de la forêt, du froid glacial et de leur imagination.

Anna Emilia Laitinen est l'illustratrice de ce conte. Les illustrations sont faites avec beaucoup de détails. Les couleurs sont douces aveec une prédominance de différents verts, blanc, gris et de brun.

Commentaires personnels : Ce conte qui parle d'une légende est intéressante et amène le lecteur à voyager dans son propre imaginaire. J'ai lu ce conte à des enfants âgés de 3 à 5 ans, et bien que le texte soit long, les enfants ont été très réceptifs et intéressés. 

D'autre part, ce conte me fait penser aussi à d'autres histoires du même type : Princesse Mononoke et Nausicaä de la vallée du vent de Hayao Miyazaki où l'être humain et la nature se confrontent, où les animaux sont des divinités et des sages et où l'être humain apprend à vivre avec la nature et à la respecter.

The story is from the collection " Just So Stories " by Rudyard Kipling. This tale traces the myth of the domestication of wild animals by humans. Several animals are represented: the dog, the horse and the cow. The cat is the only animal with cunning and intelligence allow him to take advantage of his situation.

• CHARACTERS

The characters represented are wild cat, wild dog, wild horse and wild cow, and a woman and a man. Each character appears progressively in the story. Interactions mainly pass between the woman and each animal.

• DESIGNS

The illustrations were made by Leah Weber. The illustrations are very detailed , the main colors are green , beige and red.

This illustrator works mainly for the youth press and publishing.

Personnal comments : This kind of tale is one that I prefer. Unfortunately, I couldn't read it to children as they were too young. However, I advise all those interested in myths and legends and moral stories to read "Just so stories."

• HISTOIRE :

L'histoire est tirée du recueil de nouvelles « Histoires comme ça » de Rudyard Kipling. 

Ce conte-nouvelle retrace le mythe de la domestication des animaux sauvages par les hommes. Plusieurs animaux sont représentés : le chien, le cheval et la vache. Le chat est le seul animal dont la ruse et l'intelligence lui permettra de tirer profit de sa situation. 

• PERSONNAGES :

Les personnages représentés sont le chat sauvage, le chien sauvage, le cheval sauvage et la vache sauvage, et l'homme et la femme. Chaque personnage apparaît au fur et à mesure dans l'histoire. Les interactions se passent essentiellement entre la femme et chacun des animaux.

• ILLUSTRATIONS :

Les illustrations ont été faites par Léa Weber. Les illustrations sont très détaillées, les couleurs principales sont le vert, le beige et le rouge. 

Cette illustratrice travaille essentiellement pour la presse jeunesse et l'édition.

Commentaires personnels : Les contes-nouvelles sont l'un des types de contes que je préfère. Je n'ai malheureusement pas pu le présenter à des enfants car trop jeunes. Par contre, je conseillerai à toutes personnes intéressées par les mythes et légendes et les morales de lire « Histoires comme ça ».

The story takes place in Mexico. Elena wants to become a glassblower like her father. But no girl has done this job before. She decides to pass for a boy to learn from the best glassblowers in Monterey. She travels alone with the old dad's cane and meets a multitude of characters she helps with her talent for singing and who support her during her journey.

• CHARACTERS

At the beginning of the story, we can see Elena living with her ​​older brother and their father in a small village in Mexico. She admires her father and wants to continue its work. Her dad thinks that a girl can't be a glassblower. With the support of her older brother and her encounters on her way to Monterey, she is chasing her dream. Elena shows that she has confidence in herself and her abilities to succeed. She is brave and left home into the unknown. She continues to believe in it thanks to the support of his brother and encounters she made along the way. She is creative and find new ways to make glass that will make her reputation thereafter.

• DESIGNS

Ana Juan is an illustrator whose work is prevalent among some publishers in the United States and Spain. The illustrations in this story show of colorful characters and very detailed. The colors are bright throughout the story. Some illustrations in the middle of history show an inspiration from current Chiaroscuro in painting and photography. Personnal comments : This story touched me personally because it demonstrates the courage and the trust Elena shows in herself and her capabilities. I had the opportunity to read this story to some children and their reaction to the story was magical to see. Some were intrigued by the disguise of Elena as a boy and asked me why ; others remained speechless at the sight of the first success of Elena and others applauded.

L'histoire se passe au Mexique. Elena veut devenir souffleur de verre comme son père. Mais aucune fille auparavant n'a fait ce métier. Elle décide de se faire passer pour un garçon pour apprendre auprès des meilleurs souffleurs de verre à Monterey. Elle voyage seule avec la vieille canne de son père et rencontre une multitude de personnages qu'elle aide avec son talent pour les chansons et qui la soutiennent durant son parcours. 

• PERSONNAGES :

Au début de l'histoire, on peut voir Elena vivant avec son grand frère chez leur père dans un petit village au Mexique. Elle admire son père et veut poursuivre son travail. Ce dernier pense qu'une fille ne peut faire un tel métier. Avec le soutien de son grand frère et de ses rencontres sur son trajet vers Monterey, elle poursuit son rêve. 

Elena montre qu'elle a une confiance en elle et en ses capacités à réussir. Elle est courageuse et quitte le foyer familial vers l'inconnu. Elle continue à croire en elle grâce au soutien de son frère et aux rencontres qu'elle fait en chemin. Elle est créative et trouve une nouvelle façon de fabriquer du verre qui fera sa réputation par la suite.

• ILLUSTRATIONS :

Ana Juan est une illustratrice dont le travail est répandu chez certains éditeurs aux États Unis et en Espagne. 

Les illustrations de cette histoire montrent des personnages hauts en couleurs et très détaillés. Les couleurs sont assez vives tout au long de l'histoire. Quelques illustrations au milieu de l'histoire montrent une inspiration du courant Clair-obscur en peinture et en photographie.

Commentaires personnels : Ce conte m'a touché personnellement par la démonstration du courage et de la confiance qu'Elena montre en elle-même et en ses capacités. J'ai eu l'occasion de lire cette histoire à certains enfants et leur réaction à l'histoire était magique à voir. Certains ont été intrigués par le déguisement d'Elena en garçon et m'ont demandé pourquoi, d'autres restaient bouche bée à la vue de la première réussite d'Elena et d'autres encore ont applaudi.

A sister and a brother. They are far different from each other. They don't share the same interests and always fight when put together. One day, they are pushed to play together outside. Jack is curious and explores the empty lot where they're at. He discovers the tunnel and vanish inside. Rose awaits for him but Jack doesn't come back.

• CHARACTERS

Jack is a active boy who likes to play sports, shout and fight. His curiosity pushes him to vanish inside the tunnel. He is careless because he doesn't consider the dangers that could exist on the other side.

Rose is a dreamer and likes to read stories by herself. She's also scared of the dark, of witches and the big bad wolf. When her brother disappear, she froze terrorized and think about all the monsters that could be on the other side of the tunnel. But she have to look for him. She is brave and face her fears to find her brother.

• DESIGNS

The illustrations are characteristic of Anthony Browne books. Browne illustrates himself his stories. They are realistic and detailed. The illustrations shows surreal paintings.

Browne is distinguished by his witty and thought-provoking use of surrealism and has illustrated classics including Alice in Wonderland and King Kong.

Personnal comments : this story is a beautiful story about women or girls being strong, brave, facing their fears and overcoming them. They seem fragile at first but are the bravest ones who face the danger. I love these kind of stories. The tunnel makes me think about an Anderson's tale : the Ice Queen. This last tale has a similar story.

Un frère et une sœur. Ils sont très différents l'un de l' autre . Ils ne partagent pas les mêmes intérêts et se disputent toujours lorsqu'ils sont mis ensemble. Un jour, ils sont poussés à jouer ensemble à l'extérieur. Jack est curieux et explore le terrain vague où ils se trouvent. Il découvre le tunnel et disparaître à l'intérieur. Rose l'attend mais Jack ne revient pas .

• PERSONNAGES :

Jack est un garçon actif qui aime faire du sport, chahuter et se battre. Sa curiosité le pousse à disparaître à l'intérieur du tunnel. Il est négligent parce qu'il ne tient pas compte des dangers qui pourraient exister de l'autre côté . Rose est une rêveuse et elle aime lire des histoires seule. Elle a peur du nori, des sorcières et du grand méchant loup . Lorsque son frère disparaît, elle reste figée par la peur et pense à tous les monstres qui pourraient être de l'autre côté du tunnel. Mais elle doit aller à sa recherche. Elle est courageuse et affronte ses peurs pour retrouver son frère.

• ILLUSTRATIONS :

Les illustrations sont caractéristiques des livres d'Anthony Browne. Il illustre lui-même ses histoires. Ces illustrations sont réalistes et détaillées. Elles affichent des peintures surréalistes. Anthony Browne se distingue par son utilisation d'esprit et de réflexion du surréalisme et a illustré plusieurs classiques y compris Alice au pays des merveilles et King Kong.

Commentaires personnels : cette histoire est une belle histoire de femmes ou de jeunes filles courageuses, qui font face à leurs peurs et les surmontent. Elles semblent fragile au début, mais sont les personnages plus courageux car elles font face au danger. J'adore ce genre d'histoires. Le tunnel me fait penser à un conte de Hans Christian Anderson : la Reine des neiges. Ce dernier raconte une histoire similaire.
