• STORY 

The story is a version of Little Riding Hood originally from China. The title must be written Jin Hua (golden flower) in Pinyin, the mandarin system of translation from mandarin written's characters.

In the story, Din' Roa's mother needs to go away from home because her sister's sick. She leaves and gives her youngest's son responsability to Din' Roa. Their grandmother living nearby is absent too. But when the night comes, she's appears at Din' Roa's house but in an unfamiliar form.

• CHARACTERS 

Din' Roa is a responsible little girl. She takes care of her brother but also of the lambs and the chicken during the absence of her mother. She is smart and knows right away that the grand mother who appears at their doors at night seems strange and dangerous. 

This brave little girl manages to escape from the danger by herself and she also protect her younger brother. She is not scared of the danger and outsmart the grand mother's incarnation.

The designs are made by Martine Bourre. The illustrations are simplistic, made in a way that looks like a chinese print.

• HISTOIRE :

Cette histoire est une version du conte «Le petit chaperon Rouge», originaire de Chine. Le titre s'écrit plutôt Jin Hua (fleur d'or) en pinyin, le système de traduction des charactères écrits en mandarin.

Dans l'histoire, la mère de Din' Roa a besoin de s'absenter pour s'occuper de sa sœur malade. Elle donne la responsabilité à sa fille aînée de s'ocuper des troupeaux et de son petit frère. Leur grand mère vit à côté de la maison de Din' Roa, mais se trouve elle aussi absente. Lorsqu'arrive la nuit, la grand mère sous une forme non familière frappe à la porte.

• PERSONNAGES :

Din' Roa est une petite fille responsable. Elle s'occupe de son petit frère, mais aussi des troupeaux d'agneaux et du poulailler en l'absence de sa mère. Elle est intelligente et sait tout de suite que la grand mère qui apparaît à leur porte est étrange et dangereuse.

Cette courageuse petite fille parvient à échapper du danger par elle même et à protéger son petit frère du même coup. Elle n'a pas peur du danger et surpasse par son intelligence les manigances du l'incarnation étrange de sa grand mère.

Les illustrations ont été faites par Martine Bourre. Elles sont épurées et simplistes, faites à la façon d'estampes chinoises.

The story portrays Mariétou, a little girl who's active, fearless and a «know-it-all». She seems scared of nothing. But her grandpa's story about the spirit of the panther-man who's always roaming around at night, always looking to fill his unending hunger, gives her the creeps.

The story takes place in Cameroun, Africa. In the first pages, we can see Mariétou's house and family. We can also watch her going around in Douala's marketplace, in her school, at night listening to her grand father.

• CHARACTERS
  

Mariétou is like every child : she's lively, active, joyous, confident. She likes to do things by herself and to be better than boys at climbing trees. She represent a positive and strong female character for children, especially for black and brown girls.

Even though Mariétou is confident and strong, she also is scared of the dark and needs comfort and to be reassured by her loving family. The grand father has a special place in the story as he is the one to tell the story that scared Mariétou but also gives her tools to feel secure.

• DESIGNS
  

Sourdais Clémentine is the illustrator of this story. She also illustrated «À l'eau Mariétou !» (« To the water, Mariétou ») which tell a story about Mariétou's first swimming lesson.

The pictures of the book are colorfull, detailed and gives a glimpse of what is Mariétou day to day life in Cameroon as we see her mom's cooking in their yard caring her little brother.

• HISTOIRE :

L'histoire montre Mariétou, une petite fille active, intrépide et une «mademoiselle-qui-sait-tout». Elle semble n'avoir peur de rien. Mais l'histoire de son grand père au sujet de l'esprit de l'homme-panthère qui se promène la nuit, toujours à la recherche de quelque chose pour apaiser son interminable faim, lui donne la chair de poule.

Cette histoire se passe au Cameroun, en Afrique. Dans les premières pages, nous pouvons voir la maison de Mariétou et sa famille. Nous pouvons aussi la voir se promener au marché de Douala, dans son école, le soir au pied de son grand père pour écouter son histoire.

• PERSONNAGES :

Mariétou est comme n'importe quel autre enfant : elle est vivante, active, joyeuse, confiante. Elle aime faire les choses par elle même et être meilleur que les garçons à grimper aux arbres. Elle représente un personnage féminin fort pour les enfants, notamment pour les filles à la peau noire et brune.

Même si Mariétou a une grande confiance en elle, elle a aussi peur de ce qui se cache dans le noir et a besoin d'être réconfortée et rassurée par sa famille. Son grand père tient une place particulière dans l'histoire puisqu'il est celui qui lui raconte cette histoire qui effraie Mariétou mais qui lui donne aussi des outils pour qu'elle se sente rassurée.

• ILLUSTRATIONS :

Clémentine Sourdais est l'illustratrice dans cette histoire. Elle a aussi fait les illustrations de l'histoire « À l'eau Mariétou!» qui parle de sa première leçon de natation.

Les images du livre sont très colorées, détaillées et donnent un aperçu du quotidien de Mariétou au Cameroun, tel que la représentation de sa mère cuisinant assise dans le jardin tout en portant son petit frère dans le dos.

Max is Mix's human and Mix is Max's cat. They grow up together and they become close friends. Their friendship will be changed when an little grey and tailed intruder appears. This philosophical tale focuses on friendship, trust, freedom, changes, mutual aid, maturation and evolution. 

Luis Sepúlveda is a Chilian writer who became famous with « Un viejo que leía novelas de amor » or The old man who read love stories. It was adapted to cinema in 2001 by Rolf de Heer. Luis has written around 25 tales and was involved in the film industry as a director and scriptwriter. Most importantly, Luis fought against dictatorship in the 60's, was thrown in prison for two years by Pinochet's regim, studied colonisation consequences on Shuar's indians, coordinated several Greenpeace's organizations for 5 years and is now involve with human rights NGO.

• CHARACTERS 

There is mostly three characters in this story. We first know Max and Mix when they are young. We follow their friendship through time. The bond between the human and the cat is deep and matures while both of them grows up.

The third character is introduced in the middle of the story. This intruder arrives at a point where Mix and Max go through some changes.

• DESIGNS 

The illustrations are made by Joëlle Jolivet. There is mostly writing and some pictures illustrates several moment of the story. The drawings are simple, contains three main colors : brown, black and white.

My comments: 

I affectionate particularily philosophical tale because it is one way to help readers to think, develop their critical sense, ask questions and seek answers. I think it is essential to introduce these types of stories to children. After reading it, it is important to discuss with the children about what they learned and understood, to collect their comments and questioning.

Max est l'humain de Mix et Mix est le chat de Max. ils grandissent ensemble et deviennent des amis proches. Leur amitié sera changée à jamais lorsqu'un petit intrus gris et à queue fait son apparition. 

Ce conte philosophique se concentre sur l'amitié, la confiance, la liberté, les changements, l'entraide, la maturation et l'évolution.

Luis Sepúlveda est un écrivain chilien qui est devnu célèbre avec « Un viejo qu leía novelas de amor » ou Le vieil homme qui lisait des livres d'amour. Il a été adapté au cinema en 2001 par Rolf de Heer. Luis a écrit environ 25 contes et a été impliué dans l'industrie du film en tant que réalisateur et scénariste. • PERSONNAGES :

Il y a principalement trois personnages dans cette histoire. Nous prenons connaissance de Max et Mix lorsqu'ils sont jeunes. Nous suivons leur amitié à travers le temps. Le lien entre l'humain et le chat est profond et mûrit pendant qu'ils grandissent.

Le troisième personnnage est introduit au milieu de l'histoire. Cet intrus arrive au point oû Mix et Max passent à traves des changements.

• ILLUSTRATIONS :

Les illustrations sont faites par Joëlle Jolivet. Il y surtout de l'écriture et els dessins illustrent plusieurs moments dans l'histoire. Les dessins sont simples, contiennent trois couleurs pricnipales: brun, noif et blanc.

Mes commentaires : 

J'affectionne particulièrement les contes philosophiqus car ils offrent un moyen d'aider les lecteurs à réfléchif, développer leur sens critique, poser des questions et obtenir des réponses. Je pense qu'il est essentiel d'introduire ce type d'histoires aux enfants. Après avoi lu l'histoire, demandez aux enfants ce qu'ils ont appris et en ont  compris ;  recueillez leurs commentaires et leurs questions.

I love this book. Simply because it helps popularize certain taboo subjects. The more we have diverse stories and representations and subjects that talk about what separates us and what rallies us together, the weaker these taboos becomes.

Mes commentaires : 

J'aime beaucoup cette histoire. Tout simplement parce qu'elle aide à populariser certains sujets tabous. Plus nous avons des représentations diversifiées d'histoires et portant sur ce qui nous différencie et nous rassemble, moins ces tabous auront du poids.

This is the second review I'm doing on Toni and Slade Morrison's book. This one is different that the album story I posted on «The big box». 

The story of «Who's got game ? Poppy or the Snake ?» is inspired by a fable by Aesop, Greek slave and story-teller of about 400 fables between 620 and 560 BCE.

In this story, Toni and Slade are revisiting Aesop's fables and give new interpretations. 

« Their powerful, modern, rythmic stories are receptive ; with an ending giving reinvented moral lessons. The victim may be winning, the fearful has a chance to become strong, the idiot can be insightful, the powerful can lose its power. Anything can happen !» (translated from French)

There are three characters in the book : an old man, the story-teller, his grandson and a snake.

The grandson is telling his granpa he doesn't want to go back to school after summer time because he think he isn't smart, have bad grades at school and his parents think of him as a lazy and dreamy child. The old man then tells him a story about him and a snake.

This is a philosophical tale. So the ending of the story has a moral lesson.

The illustrations have been made by Pascal Lemaître. He is an illustrator since 1990 for French and American press. 

The graphics are made as in a comic book. The illustrations are often simplistic and sometimes more detailed. Pascal Lemaître has chosen few colors for all the illustrations (brown, green, black, blue and grey).

C'est la deuxième fois que je commente un livre de Toni et Slade Morrison. Celui-ci est différent l'autre histoire «Ma liberté à moi».

L'histoire « À ton avis... Le vieil homme ou le serpent ? » est inspiré d'une fable d'Ésope, un esclave et conteur grec ayant écrit environ 400 fables entre 620 et 560 avant notre ère. Dans cette histoire, Toni et Slade revisitent une des fables d'Ésope et lui donne de nouvelles interprétations.

Il y a trois personnages dans cette histoire : un vieil homme, le conteur, son petit-fils et un serpent.

Le petit-fils dit à son grand-père qu'il ne veut pas retourner à l'école après les vacances d'été parce qu'il pense qu'il n'est pas intelligent, a des mauvaises notes à l'école et ses parents pensent qu'il est un enfant paresseux et rêveur. Le vieil homme lui raconte alors une histoire sur lui et un serpent.

Ceci est un conte philosophique. Ainsi, la fin de l'histoire a une leçon de morale.

• ILLUSTRATIONS :

Les illustrations ont été réalisées par Pascal Lemaître. Il est un illustrateur depuis 1990 poru la presse française et américaine. Les images sont faites sous forme de bandes dessinées. Les illustrations se veulent plus souvent simplistes et parfois plus détaillées. Pascal Lemaître a choisi certaines couleurs pour toutes les illustrations (brun, vert, noir, bleu et gris).

Throughout the story, we follow the adventures of Yuko-chan, an orphaned blind girl and her dog Shiba. This beautiful tale is set in the time of the historic eruption of Mount Asama (Tenmei eruption). Despite her handicap and thanks to her optimism and her spirit of survival, she will serve as an example to anyone who faces life's obstacles, great or small.

The book is bilingual (english and japanese) and can be read in both languages.

• CHARACTERS
  

Yuko-chan is a blind girl. She lives at the Daruma temple. Yuko-chan mean warm water girl, inspired by her warm, gentle personnality. Osho-san is the head monk and he's trying to find solutions to recover from the last volcano's eruption.

Daruma is a zen buddhist monk who traveled from India to China and prayed for 9 years. His teaching is 'If you fall seven times, you must pick yourself up eight times. You need strong faith and the belief you can accomplish your goals.'

Sunny Seki also illustrated the book. His designs are very detailed and colorfull too. The illustrations puts the characters in the temple, with traditional japanese's instruments, clothes and hairstyles, the village, the mountains and all the traditional environment in the 18th century.

Even though it represents a story from the past, the story is relevant today and appeal to preschooler's interests.

Tout au long de l'histoire, nous suivons les aventures de Yuko-can, une jeune fille aveugle et orpheline et de son chien Shiba. 
Ce beau conte est situé au moment de l'éruption historique du mont Asama (Tenmei). Malgré son handicap et grâce à son optimisme et son esprit de survie, elle va servir d'exemple à tous ceux qui font face à des obstacles dans la vie, petits ou grands.

Ce live est bilingue (anglais et japonais) et peut être lu dans les deux langues.

• PERSONNAGES :

Yoko-chan est une jeune fille aveugle qui vit au temple Daruma. Yuko-chan signifie fille des eaux chaudes, nom inspiré par sa personnalité chaleureuse et douce. 
Osho-san est le moine gérant du temple. Il essaie de trouver des solutions pour se remettre après la dernière éruption du volcan Asama.
Daruma est un moine boudhiste zen qui a voyagé depuis l'Inde jusqu'en Chine où il pria pendant 9 ans. Son enseignement est : « Si tu tombes sept fois, tu dois de relever huit fois. Tu as besoin d'avoir une foi profond et la croyance que tu peux atteindre tous tes objectifs. »

• ILLUSTRATIONS :

Sunny Seki est également illustrateur. Ses illustrations sont très détaillées et colorées. Elles positionnent les personnages dans leur milieu environnement du 18ème siècle : le temple, des instruments, vêtements et coiffures traditionnelles japonaises, le village, les montagnes.
Même si cela représente un conte historique, l'histoire est toujours pertinente aujourd'hui et rejoint les intérêts des enfants d'âge préscolaire.
